John Metcalfe studied architectural and mechanical drafting in his hometown of Sarasota, Florida. Using this as a foundation, he developed his eye for both perspective and color. When John was in technical school, he also sought creative outlets through music. He played in rock bands and created stage and light shows to accompany his performances. His initial career track after school was as a journeyman electrician. In this time, he found new ways to explore his obsession with light. His ability to create unique solutions for challenging electrical installations made him a sought-after member of countless contracting projects.
In 2001, he began to explore the medium of paint on canvas and came to the realization that he had discovered how he could focus all of his creative energies. He began to exhibit his work at multi-artist shows in south and central Florida. In 2005, John moved to Tallahassee, Florida area, retired from electrical contracting, and devoted himself full-time to his art accumulating sales, accolades and awards.
John and his family settled in the quiet town of Havana just outside of Tallahassee, where he discovered a lively arts, design, and antiques scene. He bought and renovated a building on US27, Havana’s Main Street, and opened It’s a JEM Fine Art gallery. Offering his work as well as the works of others with a unique and special eye for art and design.
North Florida is where John explores and develops his signature style – what he calls the “fundamental elements of light”. He constantly exhibits his work at shows and galleries throughout the Southeastern region of the United States. To date, more than 500 of his paintings are in corporate and private collections around the world.
